Doposud provedeno bez úspěchu

The owner arrived with his vehicle after DPF replacement in another workshop. The customer purchased an aftermarket DPF filter in an internet e-shop and had it installed in a small workshop without any warranty. With the new DPF filter the vehicle was permanently switching to a limp-home condition, the MIL was On a had 3 DTCs stored in memory. The workshop refused to repair the faults because they did not supply the DPF filter.

VOZIDLO JSEM NEOPRAVOVAL

The owner wanted to save money without suspecting that the spare part supplier is selling a completely non-fuctional converter, DPF filter (leaking 37,5 % of the generated soot) and with the differential pressure sensor DPF filter tubes with switched designation.

The workshop that installed the DPF filter didn't do too much testing and refused liability because the DPF filter was supplied by the customer. The only additional operation with regards to the generated faul by the previous workshop was the replacement of the differential pressure sensor. As we found out later there was nothing wrong with the original sensor since the incorrect readings were caused by the switched marking of the sensor tubes installed on the DPF filter.

The DPF filter perforated (7631/1)

Every second channel in one direction and every fourth channel in the other direction is completely open. Thus the filter on purpose with 1/3 of its area is allowing soot to flow freely out of the exhaust and pollute the air that we breathe with dangerous particles

Oxidation converter (7631/2)

The visual inspection is showing several problems. The center is completely open allowing exhaust gases to flow through without any restriction or contact with the catalytic layer. The tightly rolled metal around the hole is not allowing any flow of gases. The high soot contamination is pointing to a problem with the converter. The converter doesn't contain any precious metals (or only marginal) because under normal cirmustances soot should burn off due to high temperatures generated by a working converter.

Unprofessional and dead (7631/3)

Regeneration attempt is not generating any heat.

Manufacturer incorrect designation (7631/4)

If you connect the hoses of the DPS sensor according to the yellow markings they are opposite to what they should be. Even the tube diameters are swapped.

Incorrect DPS sensor signal (7631/5)

DPS sensor testing
From top to down: power supply, signal and ground

Test mode: Start and increased rpm

The signal trace instead of rising is going down. This is the result of inverted DPS sensor pressure monitoring tubes on the DPDF filter.

Differential pressure after swapping DPS sensor hoses (7631/6)

Test of DPS sensor after swapping hoses
From top to down: power supply, signal and ground

Test mode: Start and increased rpm

Now we can see that the differential pressure is rising correctly with the engine rpm.

Verifying converter efficiency (7631/7)

Static service regeneration was running about 15 minutes after which it was interrupted with a negative result.

Fully functional catalytic converter during regeneration generates such high temperatures that a paper placed at the end of the tail pipe should start burning. Not in our case.
Simple test to verify a converter without any diagnostic tools.

ECU reporting regeneration unsuccessful (7631/8)

Regeneration unsuccessful due to low temperature.

Where to have your car repaired? (7631/10)

Last week we had a customer with a Ford Mondea that had bad experience with an authorised dealer that misdiagnosed the DPF system on his vehicle.

The customer of this Ford purchased the part manufactured in Poland over the internet himself and the small workshop installing the filter has just replaced parts according to DTC codes without any proper diagnostics.

First step - log recording of DPS sensor values (7631/11)

When the accelerator pedal was pressed (the smooth rising trace from the middle) differential pressure was decreasing instead of rising. This was our first suspicion that the hoses were swapped.

After swapping of hoses (7631/12)

Correctly connected hoses of the DPS sensor. The differential pressure is rising with increasing engine rpm.
